In today’s busy lifestyles, it can be easy for mental health issues to go unrecognized. Oftentimes, for teens, the signs are attributed to normal age-related mood swings; however, no matter the age, some signs signal an evaluation appointment could be beneficial. Here’s what to look for:

  • Angry, violent outbursts
  • Engaging in risk-taking behavior
  • Fear of being around others, even family
  • Loss of interest in activities that once were enjoyable
  • Mistrust of people they normally confided in or counted on
  • Panic attacks
  • Restlessness or agitation
  • Sense of guilt or unworthiness
  • Significant weight loss and lack of appetite
  • Sleeplessness
  • Struggling to work, parent, or keep up at home
  • Unable to focus
  • Unable to handle stress with normal coping strategies
  • Using drugs or alcohol to cope

TIPS FOR HAVING A TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

It might feel uneasy beginning a conversation about mental health, but the following pointers can help open a discussion:

  • I'm worried about you. Can we talk about what you are going through? If not, is there anyone you’d be comfortable having a discussion with?
  • How can I help you discuss these issues with your parents or other trusted person who is responsible and cares about you?
  • What can I help you with? Chores? Laundry? Dinner? Babysitting?
  • I care about you and want to listen. What do you want me to know about how you feel?
  • Can you think of anyone or anything that has helped you cope with similar situations in the past?
  • Sometimes just talking with somebody else who has gone through a similar experience helps. Do you know anyone who has had a similar experience?
  • It seems like you are having a hard time. How can I help you to find help?
  • I'm concerned for your safety. Have you thought about harming yourself or anyone else?
